What patients say

Real relief, in their own words

"My knee had been bothering me for nearly 10 years, so I honestly thought I'd just have to live with it. After one acupuncture treatment, I was shocked by how much better it felt. I didn't expect such a noticeable difference from just one session."

— Carrey L.

"I came in with blurry vision and wasn't expecting anything to happen right away. But during the treatment, my vision suddenly became clear. I was honestly so surprised. I've never experienced anything like that before."

— Sonya C.

"I've tried so many things for my anxiety and nothing seemed to really stick. I decided to give acupuncture a shot and was surprised by how calm I felt afterward. For once, I felt like I had actually found something that worked for me."

— Daniel K.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you come to my home, or do I come to you?

Flowlight Wellness is fully mobile: two Registered Acupuncturists travel to you, whether that's your home, your office, or a care residence, anywhere in Vancouver, Richmond or Burnaby. We don't operate a physical clinic location.

Is mobile acupuncture covered by insurance?

Most extended health plans that cover acupuncture will also cover a Registered Acupuncturist's mobile visit. We offer direct billing where available, and every visit includes a detailed receipt you can submit yourself. Coverage and any remaining balance depend on your individual plan.

Why are there two acupuncturists at every visit?

Two Registered Acupuncturists work together on every visit, either both treating one patient at once (2-on-1) or each treating one of two patients individually. This means a more thorough assessment, faster treatment, and the option of techniques like simultaneous tui na that aren't possible working solo.

Does acupuncture hurt, and is it safe?

Acupuncture needles are hair-thin, much finer than a needle used for an injection, so most people feel little more than a brief pressure or dull ache on insertion. All needles are sterile and single-use. Our full About TCM page covers what to expect for every treatment we offer.

What languages can I be treated in?

Both practitioners are fluent in English, Mandarin, and Cantonese, so your consultation and treatment can be conducted in whichever language you're most comfortable with.

How do I book, and how far in advance?

At-home visits are booked online after a short intake form; workplace Wellness Days are booked through our online request form. We recommend booking a few days ahead where possible, though we'll always do our best to accommodate shorter notice.

A little prep keeps every session on time. Here's the short list for HR and for employees.

For HR
  • Send an email informing staff about the event (email template provided).
  • Prepare a large private room that can comfortably fit 6 employees, e.g. a board or meeting room.
  • Settle payment in full before we arrive for treatment.
For Employees

  • Book your session using the Cal.com link provided by HR and choose either Line 1 or Line 2. Appointments are shown in 15-minute intervals, but each treatment lasts 30 minutes.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing if possible. Otherwise, your regular work attire is perfectly fine.
  • If you can, keep your hair and ears easily accessible.
  • Arrive on time, take a seat at your assigned line, and relax.
  • After your 30-minute treatment, we'll gently remove the needles, and you'll be ready to continue your day.
The appointment

How the Wellness Day works

Every treatment follows the same disciplined sequence, timed to keep your office running on schedule.

  1. Arrival & check-inEmployees arrive in pairs at roughly 15-minute intervals and go straight to their assigned treatment line (Line 1 or Line 2). We confirm their name and chief concern, screen for red flags, and receive verbal consent, which is revocable at any time.
  2. Needles placedThin, sterile needles are placed in the scalp, outer ear, and hands to target the stated concern.
  3. Rest, about 30 minutesFrom the moment needling begins to the moment the needles are removed, the appointment lasts approximately 30 minutes while the employee rests.
  4. Next pair beginsWhile the current pair rests with their needles still in, we begin check-in and needling for the next pair at their line.
  5. Wrap-upAfter about 30 minutes, needles are removed, we confirm how the employee is feeling, and they return to work.
  6. RepeatThis continues until all 6 scheduled employees have been seen.

After your event: we check in with your key decision maker to see how the day went, whether you'd like to extend, and whether you'd like to book a repeat event.

Every patient also receives a short feedback email after their treatment.

What is TCM?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete medical system developed over more than 2,000 years in China. It is based on the idea that the body's vital energy, called Qi (pronounced "chee"), flows through pathways called meridians. When that flow is unobstructed, the body is healthy. When it is disrupted, symptoms and illness arise.

TCM treats the whole person, not just the symptom. Practitioners assess your constitution, lifestyle, emotional state, and physical presentation to identify the root cause of an imbalance, then use tools like acupuncture, cupping, gua sha, tui na, and ear seeding to restore balance and support healing.

Unlike Western medicine, which often targets a single mechanism or pathogen, TCM looks at patterns across the whole body and addresses them together. It can be used on its own or as an effective complement to conventional medical treatment.

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin, sterile, single-use needles into specific points on the body along the meridian pathways. These points correspond to areas where Qi and blood are concentrated and can be accessed and redirected. In a clinical setting, it is also well-supported by research showing effects on the nervous system, blood flow, and inflammation.

Benefits

Pain relief (acute & chronic)
Headache & migraine reduction
Improved sleep quality
Reduced fatigue & brain fog
Stress & anxiety relief
Improved digestion
Better visual clarity
Support for insomnia

Does it hurt?

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine, much thinner than a hypodermic needle, so most people feel very little on insertion. You may notice a brief sensation of pressure, warmth, a dull ache, or a mild electric-like feeling at the needle site. These are normal and indicate the needle has reached the correct depth. The sensation usually passes quickly.

What should I expect to feel afterwards?

Many people feel deeply relaxed or even drowsy after treatment. It is also common to feel a pleasant heaviness in the treated areas, improved range of motion, or a sense of emotional release. Some people notice a temporary mild soreness at needle sites, similar to the feeling after a good workout. Symptoms often continue to improve in the hours and days following a session.

Aftercare

Drink plenty of water after your session. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and exposure to extreme cold or heat for the rest of the day. Rest if you feel tired. Avoid massaging the needle sites if they are tender. If you have questions or unusual reactions, contact us directly.

What is Cupping?

Cupping is a therapy in which heated or suction cups are placed on the skin, creating a vacuum that draws the skin and superficial muscle layer upward into the cup. This technique has been used in TCM for thousands of years to move stagnant Qi and blood, warm the meridians, and draw out pathogenic factors like cold and dampness.

Benefits

Relief of muscle tension & pain
Improved circulation
Reduction of inflammation
Faster recovery from injury
Respiratory support
Deep relaxation

What should I expect to feel afterwards?

Cupping often leaves circular marks on the skin that can range from light pink to dark purple, depending on the degree of stagnation in the area. These are not bruises in the traditional sense and are generally painless. They typically fade within 3 to 7 days. You may feel warmth, lightness, or relief in the treated area immediately after. Some people experience mild sensitivity to touch over the cupped areas for a day or two.

Aftercare

Keep the cupped areas warm and covered for several hours after treatment. Avoid cold water, wind, and air conditioning directly on the marks. Drink water and rest if needed. Do not scrub or aggressively massage the marks as they heal.

What is Ear Seeding?

Ear seeding is a form of auricular therapy, a technique that applies tiny seeds (traditionally from the Vaccaria plant) or small metal pellets to specific acupressure points on the outer ear. These points correspond to every part of the body according to auricular medicine, and gentle pressure on the seeds stimulates those areas between your formal treatment sessions.

Ear seeds are held in place with small adhesive tape and can be worn for several days, allowing you to press on them throughout the day for ongoing support.

Benefits

Extended treatment effect between sessions
Stress & anxiety support
Sleep improvement
Cravings & appetite regulation
Pain management
Mood support

Does it hurt?

No. The seeds rest on the surface of the ear and do not puncture the skin. When you press on them, you may feel a mild pressure or a brief achiness at the point, which is a sign that the correct point has been activated. This is generally a comfortable sensation.

What should I expect to feel afterwards?

You may notice the effects of ear seeding gradually throughout the days you wear them. Press on the seeds for 30 seconds a few times a day, especially when you experience the symptom you're targeting. Some people feel immediate relaxation or improved clarity when pressing on stress-related points.

Aftercare

Remove the seeds if the skin becomes irritated or the adhesive no longer holds. Keep the ear area clean and dry. Do not wear seeds in the shower or swimming pool. Contact us if you have any concerns about skin sensitivity.

What is Gua Sha?

Gua sha involves firmly stroking the skin with a smooth-edged instrument, traditionally jade, rose quartz, or a ceramic spoon, over areas of tension or stagnation. The word "gua" means to scrape or stroke, and "sha" refers to the redness that rises to the surface as circulation is stimulated. It is used along the back, neck, shoulders, and limbs, and in a gentler form on the face for cosmetic purposes.

Benefits

Release of deep muscle tension
Improved lymphatic drainage
Reduced neck & shoulder pain
Immune support
Facial contouring & lifting (facial gua sha)
Reduction of chronic pain

Does it hurt?

Gua sha should not be painful, though it does involve firm pressure. You may feel a warm scraping sensation and some tenderness if the area is particularly tight or stagnant. The redness or petechiae (sha) that appears is expected and indicates that blood and Qi are moving. Let your practitioner know at any point if the pressure is too much.

What should I expect to feel afterwards?

Like cupping, gua sha often produces temporary redness or flushed-looking skin in the treated area that fades within a few days. Immediately after, most people feel significant release of tension and improved range of motion. Mild tenderness in the area is normal for a day or two.

Aftercare

Keep the treated area warm and protected from wind and cold for at least 24 hours. Avoid applying ice or cold packs. Drink water and rest. The redness will fade on its own without any special treatment.

What is Tui Na?

Tui Na is a form of Chinese therapeutic massage that works directly on the meridians and acupoints using a range of hand techniques, including pressing, rolling, kneading, and grasping. The name literally means "push and grasp." Unlike relaxation massage, Tui Na is intentionally therapeutic, targeting specific imbalances rather than simply providing comfort.

How is Tui Na different from RMT and Western bodywork?

Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) and Western bodywork generally focus on the musculoskeletal system, addressing muscle tightness, fascial restrictions, and circulation through physical manipulation of the soft tissues. Tui Na also addresses these physical structures, but it layers in the TCM framework: the practitioner is simultaneously working on the meridians and acupoints, redirecting Qi, and addressing patterns of imbalance across the whole body.

Where an RMT might work to release a tight muscle, a Tui Na practitioner sees that same tightness in the context of an organ system, an emotional pattern, or a season, and works to restore balance at all of those levels at once. In the Premium Wellness Day format Flowlight offers, you may have both acupuncturists working on you simultaneously with Tui Na, which is an experience not available in conventional massage settings.

Aftercare

Drink water after your session. You may feel some muscle soreness, similar to after a workout, especially if the session targeted areas of deep tension. Rest is encouraged. Gentle movement and warmth support continued release. Avoid intense exercise the same day.
